About Burnaby
Burnaby is a city in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland region. It borders the City of Vancouver to the west, the District of North Vancouver to the north across the confluence of the Burrard Inlet and its Indian Arm, Port Moody and Coquitlam to the east, Richmond on Lulu Island to the southwest, and New Westminster and Surrey across the Fraser River to the southeast.
It is a Metro Vancouver member municipality, British Columbia’s third-largest city (after Vancouver and Surrey) by population, and the seat of Metro Vancouver’s regional district government. Burnaby has one of North America’s highest percentages of land designated as parks and open spaces, at 25%.
Burnaby is home to the main campuses of British Columbia Institute of Technology and the Simon Fraser University. Burnaby’s Metropolis at Metrotown is the province’s largest mall, the third most visited in Canada, and the fifth largest in the country. Burnaby is home to Canada’s largest film and television production studio and more than 60% of BC’s sound stages, contributing to the growth of Hollywood North.
SkyTrain’s Expo Line and Millennium Line serve the city. As of 2021, the Metrotown station in downtown Vancouver is the busiest on weekends and the second-busiest on weekdays in the regional Vancouver urban transit system.
Burnaby is situated on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hnqminm and Swxw7mesh Coast Salish Nations. Local landmarks such as Burnaby Mountain, the Burnette River, and Deer Lake, play essential roles in Indigenous history as transmitted through spoken traditions. The shorelines of Burnaby to the north, along the second narrows of Burrard Inlet, were an ancient battle site between the Lekwiltok (attackin)and the Musqueam (defending), According to Chief Charlie Qiyplenxw.
The 1858 Fraser Canyon Gold Rush, the first of many, attracted over 30,000 fortune seekers, including many American miners. Fear of annexation by the United States prompted the Colony of British Columbia to form in 1858, with New Westminster as its capital.
The development of metropolitan hubs of Vancouver and New Westminster affected Burnaby’s expansion. It grew as an agricultural area that supplied nearby markets. It later became an important transportation corridor connecting Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and the Interior. The introduction of Skytrain’s Expo Line in the twenty-first century cemented this trend.
Burnaby, along with North Vancouver and Richmond, was one of Vancouver’s first-tier suburbs as it grew into a metropolis. Hundreds of “Mid-Century Vernacular” homes were built during Burnaby’s suburbanization to meet the demand of new residents. Burnaby’s urbanization was aided by the establishment British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in 1960 and Simon Fraser University (SFU) in 1965. Burnaby became a city in 1992, one hundred years after its incorporation.
